Dr. Giancarlo Camilleri

Dr Giancarlo Camilleri is a Consultant Pain Management Specialist with expertise in all aspects of chronic and acute pain.

His specialist interests include the management of back pain, neck pain, chronic spinal pain, sciatica sacro-iliac joint pain or dysfunction, myofascial pain, chronic knee pain and chronic hip pain.

I have a multifaceted approach to pain conditions . Chronic pain, in particular back pain, is an extremely debilitating condition and can have multiple causes. I always allow sufficient time to achieve a full understanding of symptoms and to undertake a thorough assessment.

Following your consultation, further investigations may be required such as an MRI scan. I work closely with other specialist consultants such as radiologists, spine surgeons; neurosurgeons, neurologists, rheumatologists, and physiotherapists.

Many incidents of back pain can be managed with simple pain killers, physiotherapy and a gradual return to normal activities.

For specific causes of back pain, I offer specialist expertise in radio-frequency denervation (also known as facet joint denervation; medial branch radio-frequency denervation; medial branch radio-frequency neurotomy or medial branch radio-frequency ablation). This is a non-invasive treatment for patients who live with severe lower back pain and who have difficulty in walking or moving their legs due to back pain. The aim of the procedure is to stop the nerve endings sending pain signals to the brain. It involves inserting a special needle which deactivate the nerves around the spinal facet joint in your back or neck which are causing the pain. This is a minor procedure which is performed as a day case procedure.

My other ares of interest include disc degeneration; arthritis affecting the spinal facet joints; tear or rupture in disc substance; disc herniation; skeletal irregularities, such as scoliosis (curvature of the spine) or compression fractures of the vertebra.

I qualified from University of Bristol Medical School before going on to complete further specialist pain management training in London and completed my anesthetics and chronic pain training in Oxford, Brighton and London.

WHAT OUR PATIENTS SAY

Ive had a few appointments with Dr Camilleri, I consider him to be one of the best Consultants I’ve seen over the years. I have ongoing problems and today when I went to see Dr Camilleri I was very nervous and some what anxious but by the time the appointment was finished, I was at ease and a clear path was made so I hadn’t even a question to ask. Dr Camilleri is professional who is empathetic as well as kind. My only constructive criticism is maybe the hospital should take on more doctors like Dr Camilleri.

I have seen Dr Camilleri several times over the years privately and on the NHS and I have always found him to be very knowledgeable, caring and always takes the time to listen and explain. What I would call a good bedside manner. I have in the past recommended him to family and friends and would not hesitate to recommend him again.

Doctor Camilleri took every word I said with compassion and really took the time to explain what actions could be taken going forward. Leaving the consultation it was refreshing, knowing that something would be done and he was going to get me my steroid injections as soon as he could. Sure enough I received an appointment through the post before too long and also an invitation for an MRI scan to further look into my problem. I’ve just come back from my injections, having once again received great care from Dr Camilleri. Everything went great and he took the time to explain my rehabilitation programme and the points he had just injected. Perfect, I wish every Doctor was this great.
