Mr Shalin Shaunak

Mr. Shalin Shaunak is an experienced Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in hand and paediatric surgery. Born in Hammersmith, London. Mr Shaunak grew up in Greater London and Surrey/Middlesex. He then attended the prestigious Tiffin School for Boys, attaining 5 As at A-level as well as an advanced extension award in English literature.

He graduated from St George’s Hospital Medical School in 2010 with a merit and an intercalated BSc (Hons). He then explored his passion for research with a further Master’s degree from Imperial college (London) centred on the role of utilising new techniques and technologies in orthopaedic surgery. He then completed his higher surgical training in trauma and orthopaedics in the Kent, Surrey, and Sussex (KSS) Deanery.

To further enhance his expertise, he undertook prestigious post-CCT fellowships in:

  • Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery, at Great Ormond Street Hospital
  • Hand and Wrist Surgery, at Royal Berkshire Hospital
  • Complex Trauma and Reconstruction, at St Peter’s Hospital

To date he has 16 papers in peer reviewed journals, 3 book chapters and presented at 13 national and international conferences. He keeps abreast of and contributes to the latest developments in evidence-based medicine. A lot of his work has centred on comparing and contrasting techniques in the management of hand and wrist pathology, with an emphasis on evolving technologies and innovation in the field.

He also has a lasting passion for teaching, attending various conferences and courses to present. He also carries out teaching at numerous FRCS course to help promote education and growth in the surgeons of tomorrow. He is a trainer of junior doctors in both a clinical and education supervision capacity and has received excellent feedback from colleagues, staff and patients.

Hand and wrist 

Mr. Shaunak has extensive experience in both trauma and elective hand and wrist surgery. His expertise includes:

  • Trapeziectomy with ligament reconstruction
  • Dupuytren’s disease treatment
  • Carpal tunnel disease surgery
  • Wrist fusions
  • Proximal row carpectomies
  • Finger and thumb joint replacement
  • Denervations
  • Wrist arthroscopy
  • TFCC reconstruction and debridement
  • Scapholunate ligament reconstruction and scaphoid non-union surgery
  • Ganglion cysts 
  • Excision of benign/benign aggressive tumours
  • Nerve decompression 

Trauma 

Mr Shaunak has expertise in the management of a wide breadth of complex trauma operating, with expertise in complex hand and wrist surgery as well as complex limb reconstruction surgery. These include complex traumatic injuries to the upper and lower limbs as well as compartment syndrome and soft tissue procedures, helped by his previous training in plastic surgery.

  • Limb reconstruction 
  • Fracture surgery: hand and wrist, upper limb, hip, femur, foot and ankle
  • Partial hip replacement for trauma 
  • Soft tissue and tendon injuries (including biceps tendon, patella, quadriceps, triceps) and reconstructive procedures for delayed tendon rupture

Paediatric orthopaedics 

Mr Shaunak is currently paediatric orthopaedic lead for Surrey and has experience in the breadth of paediatric orthopaedics from training and his time at Great Ormond Street, an international centre of excellence.

  • Complex foot and ankle problems: revision of os trigonum, tarsal coalition, curly toe, hammer toe, hallux valgus, ingrown toenails

  • Chronic exertional compartment syndrome 

With a strong emphasis on patient-centred care, Mr. Shaunak utilises the latest surgical techniques and evidence-based practices to achieve optimal outcomes. His approach integrates rehabilitation and patient education, ensuring tailored treatment for each individual.

His current NHS practice is at Ashford and St Peter’s hospital and he lives in Surrey with his wife, who is a Consultant Oncologist in the region and his young son. In his spare time, he enjoys reading and maintaining a fit and active lifestyle.
