Spine Spondylolisthesis

A condition called spondylolisthesis describes a vertebra (spine bone) being displaced (moved out of the ordinary position) in any direction. In other words, the vertebra itself slips and this is graded based upon the level of slippage.

Symptoms of Spondylolisthesis

• Back pain
• Numbness
• Tingling/pins and needles
• Stiffness
• Excessive curve of spine

Diagnosis of Spondylolisthesis

A spine specialist will take a medical history, perform a physical examination and arrange necessary imaging techniques to diagnose this condition. X-rays, MRI scans and CT scans may be needed.

Treatment of Spondylolisthesis

Treatment options will relate to the grade of spondylolisthesis and the severity of symptoms. Non-Surgical treatments can alleviate symptoms and these include pain relief medications, hot packs, and physiotherapy exercises to prevent the condition worsening.

In some cases spondylolisthesis may also require surgical decompression and fusion. Specific surgical options will be discussed depending on the grade and type of spondylolisthesis. Spinal surgical treatments that may be recommended include: Foraminectomy, Laminotomy and Discectomy.
